Anticipating a West Side revival because of the planned casino, auto dealer Chris Haydocy is announcing plans to remodel his family's auto dealership.
The dealership, Haydocy Buick GMC, will get a new facade, an updated interior and a climate-controlled service department. "A lot of it is related to Penn National's investment" in the neighborhood, he said, referring to the company developing the nearby casino. "Hopefully, this is the start of lots of investment up and down the Broad Street corridor." The casino plan had been delayed by questions about whether the Franklin Township site would be annexed into Columbus and uncertainty about how the casino would be taxed. Both issues have been resolved in recent weeks as Penn reached an agreement with the city of Columbus on annexation and with Gov. John Kasich on taxes. Penn National, the Pennsylvania-based gambling company, has said it will spend $400 million on its Hollywood Casino Columbus, which will be just a few blocks from the dealership.
Haydocy, one of the leading advocates for the casino, said the news has inspired him to move ahead with a renovation that he has mulled for a while. He plans to have the work done by the end of 2012, which is when the casino is scheduled to open. No cost estimate was available. The dealership moved to its current location in 2000 after decades in Franklinton.
Just two years ago, the dealership suffered the double blow of the recession and General Motors' decision to discontinue the Pontiac brand. At the time, Pontiac represented about half of Haydocy's new-car sales. The dealership took some time to adapt to the loss of the brand but has staged a comeback this year. The store's new-car sales are up 30 percent through May, compared to the same period last year, according to Autoviewonline.com. dgearino@dispatch.com
